Psalm 91:3-6 King James Version
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
Most of us have had the experience.
We have felt fear or anxiety at several levels…from “troublesome” to “absolutely terrified!” When this happens, we absolutely hate the feeling.
It is just one of those fleshly emotions which our “humanity” brings us in these temporary bodies we inhabit. While these “tents” are so well made by God, they are by contrast so vulnerable to biological reactions, and the evil one uses that to his advantage all the time.
This is one of the reasons I believe we are allowed to be tested by our Lord. He wants us to learn two things in this life. (1) We are weak and needy souls who by ourselves cannot withstand all of the “slings and arrows” directed at us by Satan and his angels.
And (2) in order to “stay the course” as children of God on the narrow path to heaven, we need to fill ourselves with the love, will, trust, and strength of our Mighty Lord. It is His will that we grow in the faith by learning to lean upon Him in times of fear and other challenges.
We must know and believe in the fact that our heavenly Father is the strongest force in the universe…He MADE the universe! And now, as children of God through the blood of Christ, we can tap the very power of God Himself. We can have protection, comfort, and guidance to get beyond whatever the devil may put in our way as a stumbling block.
What’s more, as we grow and mature in the Lord, we can build confidence in Him. He will always give us more “muscle” to fight temptations. He will also give us more grace when we fall to temptations…and we will! All we have to do is remain committed to Him.
As we come to a new year, may we reflect on the past and take note of when and where we fell short of God’s goodness, and resolve to do better. At the same time, let us place more trust and faith in Him who is willing and able to protect and save us!
May we all have a great year in 2017, finding refuge and peace in our God and growing in the spirit of love for all people to the glory of the Lord Almighty…
