Acts 2:40-44 (NIV)

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.

This is a “snapshot” from scripture of the early church found in the second chapter of Acts. What glorious days they must have been. If only we could recapture this kind of love and dedication to the Lord now.

Today, we have so many different churches which have sprung up. There are denominational and non-denominational, group and community bible congregations. We have “traditional” services for the more customary age group, and the “contemporary” service looking to draw in the younger crowds.

But almost all of the churches are a third to half filled at best!

This was not the case in the first century church. Sure they met at homes for worship, but they were likely bursting at the seams with people who genuinely wanted to be there to glorify the risen Savior!

They told of the stories of Jesus, ate common meals together, remembered the death of Christ in communion, gave of their means generously, and were baptized and added to the church all the time. This is the exuberance from from which we have wandered away.

We need to teach and preach the true gospel of Christ again. We need to be on fire for the Lord again, doing what we can, as the Lord has given us gifts of ministry large and small. All works in His name for His glory count for good.

Prayer: Lord, forgive us for allowing the world and its cares and distractions to interfere with our daily commitment to you. Allow us to find our way back to you and magnify and laud your name in true, spirited worship and be shining examples to the world around us. If even one soul is swayed toward you, it will all be worth our efforts. Be with us now and bless our efforts in your name. For it is in Jesus we pray, Amen!
