“…Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances;for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:13-18
This is certainly a wish and a hope for these days of evil and unrest…
While it is an encouragement primarily for Christian brothers and sisters, the concepts can be applied from person to person.
Today, when we have so much anger and hatred being vented towards each other, it would do us good to take into consideration the words above from the apostle Paul, Silas, and Timothy who co-wrote the book of 1 Thessalonians.
The scripture we are looking at picks up with an encouragement which is plain enough…”live in peace with each other,” something we are not doing well at as a modern society. We need to be more understanding and patient with our neighbors, not rushing headlong into protests of violence fueled by hatred and half-truths.
And we should be the first ones to encourage the timid and the weak, not to push them aside as if they are of no value. They need to be helped, not rejected by us. For God sees how we treat our fellow-man, He even knows what we think of them. Therefore, if we are mistreating people for any reason, or disrespecting them, we are sinning against God!
If an evil is done against us, be slow to anger and do not pay back evil with evil. Instead, defeat evil with goodness. This isn’t a sign of impotence or frailty, but one of Godly love and strength in His name. Be the bigger person, take the ‘high road’ and grow as a Christian man or woman.
My friends, we should strive to be happy at all possible times. After all, people are jovial sometimes. But the Christian’s delight comes from the hope we have in Christ Jesus’ promises, and should carry us through almost every day. Sure we will have difficulties sometimes, but within our souls should rest a general delight in what awaits us in heaven.
Finally, let us pray more often in all circumstances, good and bad. For the Lord is our best Friend and we need to think of Him in that light. Good friends talk about everything, and it shouldn’t be any different with God!
Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive us our sins. For we live among a great many people who do not believe in you nor obey your will. Nevertheless, may we do good towards them in your name, so that we may set a Godly example. May we forgive others their trespasses as you forgive us. May we also learn to pray more often and in every situation so that our relationship with you may grow. Be with us always, in Jesus’ name we pray…Amen!
